Choose Trello if your work is a board: columns, cards, a few people, and nothing you need to configure first. Choose ClickUp if you want the board to sit next to docs, time tracking, dashboards and several other views of the same tasks. Both are free to start and both charge per person after that, so the real question is how much software you want around the cards.
We build a third, smaller kanban tool, so weigh our opinions accordingly. The prices and limits below were read from Trello's pricing page and ClickUp's pricing page in October 2026. Where a figure could not be confirmed, it is left out.
What is the real difference between ClickUp and Trello?
Trello starts from the board. A card sits in a list, the list sits on a board, and everything else (calendar, timeline, automation) is added on top, either as a paid view or a Power-Up. You can explain it to a new teammate in two minutes.
ClickUp starts from the task and gives it many places to live. The same task can show as a board, a list, a calendar or a table, and the product also carries docs, whiteboards, forms and chat. Nothing is missing, but a new workspace asks you to decide how to structure Spaces, Folders and Lists before you add your first card.
Neither is better in general. One is quick to start and narrow, the other is slower to set up and wide.
What does each one cost?
| Trello | ClickUp | |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | 10 boards and up to 10 collaborators per Workspace | Unlimited members, 5 Spaces |
| Free storage | 10 MB per file | 60 MB in total |
| Free automation | 250 Workspace command runs a month | 5 active rules, 100 actions a month |
| First paid tier | Standard, $5 per user a month billed yearly, $6 monthly | Core, $8 per user a month billed yearly |
| Next tier up | Premium, $10 yearly, $12.50 monthly | Business, $17 per user a month billed yearly |
Two things stand out. ClickUp's free plan has no limit on members, which Trello's does not match, and that matters for a large group where most people only watch. Trello's free plan has no limit on cards or on total storage, only on single files, while ClickUp counts attachments against 60 MB.
ClickUp's pricing page showed more than one version of its tiers when we read it, with older names such as Unlimited still circulating in reviews. Check the page for the figure you will actually be billed before you plan around it.
Which one is easier to learn?
Trello, by a distance. The board is the whole product on day one, and most of what a team does with it is drag a card to the next column. Views like calendar, timeline, table and dashboard arrive on the Premium tier, not before.
ClickUp rewards the time you put in. Once the structure is set up, switching between a board and a table of the same tasks is genuinely useful, and automations can move work for you. The cost is the setup, plus the habit of everyone on the team agreeing which view is the real one.
Which one is better for a kanban board?
Both draw a decent one, and both stop short of the part that makes kanban work. A work-in-progress limit, a cap on how many cards a column may hold, is not a headline feature of either. In Trello you add it with a Power-Up such as List Limits. For ClickUp we did not verify how it is handled on each plan, so check that before you rely on it.
Our guide to WIP limits explains why that cap does most of the work, and what kanban is covers the method from the start. If a board is all you want, the extra surface in ClickUp is mostly something to ignore.
When does ClickUp win?
When the board is one view among several. If your team tracks time on tasks, writes specs next to the work, wants a dashboard for a manager and needs the same list as a calendar, ClickUp keeps those in one place. Trello can get close, but it does so with Power-Ups and a Premium plan, and each add-on is another thing to maintain.
It also wins on group size at the free level. A team of fifteen can all sit in a free ClickUp workspace, while a free Trello Workspace stops at ten collaborators.
When does Trello win?
When you want to start today and be done with setup. Trello's free plan is enough for a personal system or a small team, the learning curve is nearly flat, and the board is what you see when you log in. If your honest answer to "what do we use it for?" is "to see what stage each thing is in", Trello is the tool built around that sentence.
What does a team of six pay?
Per-seat pricing means the bill follows headcount. Billed yearly, six people on Trello Standard pay $30 a month, and on ClickUp Core $48. On the next tier up it is $60 for Trello Premium and $102 for ClickUp Business. Multiply by twelve for the yearly figure, and add the monthly-billing premium if you do not commit to a year.
These are list prices from the pricing pages above. Taxes, discounts and add-ons such as ClickUp's AI features are not included.
Where does a smaller kanban tool fit?
If you read both columns and thought "I only want the board", there is a third option. EasyKanban has columns, cards, colour tags and a due date per card, and a limit you can set on any column that colours its header when you go over it. The free plan has 3 boards with unlimited cards and up to 3 members per board. Pro is €6 a month or €60 a year for the whole account, so adding teammates does not raise the bill.
It has no docs, time tracking or dashboards, and it is not trying to. You can open a board with no signup to see whether it is enough. For a longer look at leaving ClickUp see our ClickUp alternative guide, and for Trello against another all-rounder read Trello vs Asana.
Frequently asked questions
Is ClickUp better than Trello?
Not in general. ClickUp does more, with docs, time tracking, dashboards and many views, but it takes longer to set up. Trello does less and is quicker to learn. The better tool is the one that matches how much structure your team wants around its cards.
Is Trello or ClickUp cheaper?
Trello is cheaper per user at every paid tier: $5 a month for Standard billed yearly, against $8 for ClickUp Core. ClickUp's free plan allows unlimited members, which can make it cheaper for a large group that stays on the free tier.
Can ClickUp replace Trello?
Yes, ClickUp has a board view and can hold the same cards. Moving over means rebuilding your structure as Spaces, Folders and Lists, and your team will see a lot more settings than Trello showed them.
Is Trello free?
Yes. The free plan includes up to 10 boards and up to 10 collaborators per Workspace, with unlimited cards. Extra views, higher automation limits and larger files need a paid tier.
Do I need an account to try a kanban board?
Not with every tool. EasyKanban lets you open one board with up to 20 cards without signing up, saved in your browser. Most hosted task tools ask you to register before you see anything.
